The United States has launched two high-stakes diplomatic efforts on the same day in Geneva, focusing on Iran’s nuclear program and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. The talks are being led by U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. This unusual approach has raised questions among foreign policy experts about whether Washington is stretching its diplomatic capacity too thin.
Indirect discussions with Iran were held through mediation by Oman, involving Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi. After several hours of talks, both sides suggested there was limited progress, but no clear breakthrough on the long-running nuclear dispute. Analysts note that while dialogue continues, tensions remain high and the risk of regional escalation has not eased.
Soon after the Iran discussions, the U.S. team shifted focus to negotiations related to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Expectations for a major breakthrough were low, as the war remains deeply complex and politically sensitive. Critics argue that handling two major global crises in parallel may weaken Washington’s ability to give either issue the detailed attention it requires.
Some regional and international observers have expressed concern that the U.S. envoys lack the deep diplomatic experience needed to negotiate with seasoned counterparts. Others point to the absence of senior officials such as Secretary of State Marco Rubio as a sign of strain within the U.S. foreign policy apparatus.
The White House has defended the strategy, saying the administration is committed to stopping conflicts and pushing for peace through dialogue. However, experts warn that without focused, sustained diplomacy, the chances of success in resolving either the Iran nuclear standoff or the Ukraine war remain uncertain.
