U.S. military units carried out a strike on a vessel suspected of trafficking narcotics in international waters of the Eastern Pacific on Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of two individuals, officials said. The operation followed intelligence indicating the boat was moving illicit drugs along a known trafficking corridor.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the action was guided by vetted intelligence that linked the vessel to large-scale smuggling activity. "Intelligence confirmed the vessel was transporting narcotics and operating on established trafficking routes," he said.
Officials described the strike as part of ongoing U.S. efforts to disrupt transnational drug networks that use Pacific maritime routes. Authorities emphasized the mission was planned to limit harm to civilians and avoid interference with commercial shipping.
The incident highlights growing attention to maritime security in the Eastern Pacific, a key transit zone for illicit drugs. U.S. authorities said they will continue surveillance and proactive operations against organized criminal groups that threaten regional stability.
