Reports indicate that the U.S. Department of Defense has notified Canadian officials of the temporary suspension of American involvement in the advisory board. While neither country has indicated this move is permanent, it has sparked concern regarding the trajectory of bilateral military collaboration amidst a backdrop of increasing global security challenges. Historically, the advisory board has been vital in addressing continental defense and military cooperation between the two countries.

This suspension is said to stem from frustrations within the Trump administration about Canada’s levels of defense spending and military obligations. U.S. officials have consistently urged NATO allies, Canada included, to elevate their defense budgets in line with alliance spending benchmarks. President Donald Trump has often voiced criticism of Canada and other NATO nations for relying heavily on U.S. military backing while contributing less financially to collective defense efforts.

Security analysts point out that the Permanent Joint Board on Defence has successfully weathered numerous political disagreements throughout its history, including trade conflicts, wars, and diplomatic strains. Formed during World War II, it aimed to enhance coordination amid concerns over North American defense.
