President Donald Trump has officially announced a new priority visa initiative aimed specifically at fans holding tickets for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States. This strategic move is designed to efficiently accommodate the vast influx of international attendees expected for this significant sporting event, making the visa process quicker and more accessible for traveling fans.
Streamlined Visa Processing for Fans
During his announcement on Monday, Trump detailed that the US government will implement a “prioritized appointment scheduling system.” This will grant those who possess verified World Cup tickets purchased via FIFA faster access to visa interview appointments, aiming to mitigate long wait times that have become common for fans seeking US visas.
FIFA has corroborated this development, confirming that ticket holders will gain access to this exclusive system starting in early 2026. The US State Department spearheads the initiative, ensuring safe and efficient entry for visitors while upholding essential security protocols.
In his remarks, Trump emphasized the collaborative efforts of the Department of State and the Department of Homeland Security in facilitating smooth travel for soccer enthusiasts from around the globe.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, a collaborative venture involving the United States, Mexico, and Canada as host nations for the first time, is predicted to attract millions. Local officials anticipate a significant economic uplift through tourism and hospitality related to the tournament.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who was present during the announcement at the Oval Office, reiterated that ensuring safety and security remains the top priority. He stressed that a robust security framework is vital for the success of the World Cup.
Task Force Established for Effective Coordination
Trump’s remarks followed a meeting of the White House task force tasked with overseeing the World Cup preparations. Established through executive order, this group is responsible for coordinating security, transportation, and other key logistics. Trump chairs the task force, with Vice President JD Vance acting as vice chair and Andrew Giuliani serving as executive director.
Taking a personal interest in the World Cup, Trump has previously attended several major sporting events since resuming office and has consistently expressed his desire for the tournament's success on US soil.
While the president's pledge for easier travel has drawn both praise and skepticism, some critics highlight potential conflicts due to stringent immigration policies and increased federal law enforcement in certain areas. Recently, Trump indicated that he might consider relocating matches from cities like Boston or even the 2028 Olympic Games from Los Angeles if security appears uncertain.
Continuing this theme, he stated on Monday his willingness to deploy National Guard troops to assist cities requesting aid to maintain order during the tournament. He also commented on California's record on crime and natural disasters while expressing hopes for Los Angeles to remain a host city.
In anticipation of the 2026 World Cup, FIFA has been expanding its US presence; it opened a new office at Trump Tower last June, an event that saw attendance from Eric Trump, and established another office in Miami the previous year, which now manages part of its legal operations.
Next month, the draw for the World Cup group stages will be conducted at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., reflecting Trump's keen interest in leaving a legacy at significant American institutions. This draw will dictate match-ups and venues for the tournament.
