US Iran conflict 2026, Strait of Hormuz strikes, US military operation Iran, Iran missile attack Jordan, CENTCOM Iran strikes, West Asia tensions, Iran Revolutionary Guards, Hormuz military conflict
The conflict between the United States and Iran has entered a new phase of escalation after the US military confirmed that it had completed retaliatory strikes against Iranian targets near the Strait of Hormuz. The operation followed the crash of a US Army Apache helicopter off the coast of Oman, an incident that Washington blamed on Iran and described as a direct threat to American military assets in the region.
According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), American Air Force and Navy fighter jets carried out precision strikes targeting Iranian air defence systems, surveillance radar facilities and ground control stations located near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. US officials described the operation as a defensive response intended to protect American forces and maintain stability in one of the world's most sensitive maritime corridors.
Iran responded sharply to the attacks. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Iran’s armed forces would not leave any attack or threat unanswered. In a strongly worded message, he warned foreign military forces operating in the region that they remain at constant risk if tensions continue to rise. Tehran has accused Washington of increasing instability and provoking a wider regional crisis.
As the situation unfolded, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed responsibility for missile strikes targeting facilities linked to a US military base in Jordan. Iranian media reported that long-range missiles were launched toward the Al-Azraq area, while Jordanian authorities later confirmed intercepting multiple missiles over its territory. Officials stated that falling debris caused no casualties or significant material damage.
Fresh reports from Iranian media also indicated that explosions were heard in Bandar Abbas and on Qeshm Island during the early hours of Wednesday. Both locations are situated near the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route through which a significant portion of the world's oil supply passes. The renewed military activity has intensified concerns over possible disruptions to international energy markets and maritime trade.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry has also urged neighbouring Gulf countries to prevent their territories and facilities from being used for military operations against Iran. Officials argued that regional governments have both legal and moral responsibilities to avoid becoming platforms for attacks that could further destabilise West Asia and threaten regional security.
The latest developments have raised fears of a broader confrontation involving multiple countries across the region. Security analysts warn that continued military exchanges could increase the risk of miscalculation and trigger wider instability. With both Washington and Tehran maintaining firm positions, the international community is closely monitoring the situation as tensions remain high around one of the world's most strategically important waterways.
