Oil prices saw a significant increase on Wednesday as escalating tensions between the United States and Iran stirred fears of a potential collapse of the fragile ceasefire, casting uncertainty over global energy markets.
Brent crude, the international oil benchmark, surged over 3 percent, bouncing back from a recent downturn that had lowered prices to pre-conflict levels.
By 06:30 GMT on Wednesday, Brent futures for September delivery climbed to $76.48 per barrel, representing the highest price observed since June 23.
This rise in oil prices coincided with US military actions against Iran and the cancellation of a temporary waiver on certain Iranian oil transactions.
These decisions followed attacks on three commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for global energy supplies.
Officials from the US, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia attributed blame to Iran for the attacks on vessels, although Tehran has not acknowledged responsibility directly.
The US Central Command reported that it executed “a series of powerful strikes against Iran” in response to threats against commercial shipping and to impose consequences for targeting civilians in international waters.
Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister, remarked that Tehran would enact “decisive actions” to safeguard its interests following the US’s move to revoke the oil sanctions waiver.
He condemned this action as a “clear violation” of the agreement established between the two nations on June 17.
Market analyst Tony Sycamore from IG Australia noted that the agreement's vague phrasing concerning control over the Strait of Hormuz and shipping traffic management leaves much to interpretation.
He added that the ongoing disputes regarding whether the waterway is recognized as an international passage or under Iranian territorial jurisdiction remain unresolved.
Sycamore stated that it remains uncertain whether the recent US military actions will effectively alleviate tensions or if Iran will continue to assert its influence in the Strait of Hormuz without escalating the conflict.
He suggested that the current situation would keep energy markets on edge, though crude oil prices appear to have found some support for the time being.
Additionally, the US Treasury Department announced the end of a 60-day waiver concerning Iranian oil sanctions.
This waiver, which allowed for Iranian oil sales until August 21, was established during broader negotiations with Tehran.
The Treasury Department stated that all oil-related transactions would be prohibited starting from 12:01am EDT on July 17 (04:01 GMT).
The announcement also means no new approvals will be granted for transactions including oil purchases and loading activities beyond Tuesday.
Saul Kavonic, head of energy research at MST Financial, predicted that oil prices could stay elevated due to ongoing security risks in the Strait of Hormuz, especially as emergency oil stockpiles begin to deplete.
He mentioned that Iran’s aim is to reinforce its control over the waterway in the forthcoming weeks, inciting concern among US officials, Gulf nations, and global energy consumers.
Kavonic also warned that continued disruptions could hamper shipping activity through the Strait and heighten the risk of further tensions.
