Top US Military Commander Makes Surprise Visit to Venezuela After Maduro’s Capture

Post by : Shakul

The top US military commander for Latin America, General Francis Donovan, made a surprise visit to Venezuela on Wednesday, marking the first US military delegation trip to the country in years. He was accompanied by senior Pentagon official Joseph Humire for high-level security talks with Venezuela’s interim leadership.

The visit comes a month after US forces captured former Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro in a covert operation and transferred him to New York to face drug-trafficking charges. US officials said the delegation held discussions aimed at stabilising the country and strengthening regional security cooperation.

Venezuela’s interim government stated that the US delegation met with interim president Delcy Rodríguez, along with defence minister Vladimir Padrino and interior minister Diosdado Cabello. Both sides agreed to cooperate against drug trafficking, terrorism and irregular migration, according to an official statement.

The military visit follows a recent trip by US Energy Secretary Chris Wright and reflects President Donald Trump’s broader strategy of using military presence and energy policy to push for political and economic reforms in Venezuela. Washington has also increased naval operations in the Caribbean to counter drug smuggling and control oil shipments linked to Venezuela.

Venezuela’s government emphasized diplomacy as the preferred route for improving relations with Washington, stating that dialogue is key to resolving bilateral and regional issues. US Southern Command described the talks as historic, focusing on shared security across the Western Hemisphere and long-term stability in the region.
