Jalue Dorje may look like an ordinary American teenager, but his life has taken a very different path from most young people his age. Born and raised in the United States, Dorje was recognized by the Dalai Lama at a very young age as the reincarnation of a respected Buddhist lama. Today, the nineteen-year-old is living in India and training to become a spiritual leader in Tibetan Buddhism.
Dorje spent much of his childhood in Columbia Heights, a suburb near Minneapolis in the United States. Like many teenagers, he enjoyed football, video games, rap music and movies. He stayed up late playing Madden NFL on his Xbox, followed sports passionately and listened to popular artists while driving around with friends. At the same time, he was also studying Buddhist scriptures, learning Tibetan calligraphy and practicing spiritual teachings every day.
His life changed completely after graduating from high school last year. Dorje moved thousands of miles away from his family to join the Mindrolling Monastery in northern India near the Himalayan foothills. The monastery is known as one of the important centers of Tibetan Buddhist learning and spiritual training.
Recently, Dorje traveled to Kathmandu, Nepal, to attend sacred rituals and teachings at the famous Shechen Monastery near the historic Boudhanath Stupa. The monastery is one of the holiest places in Tibetan Buddhism. During the visit, Dorje met his parents, who traveled from the United States to see him and support his new spiritual life.
Although he now wears traditional maroon and golden monk robes, Dorje still carries parts of his American personality with him. Underneath his robes, he wore white Crocs decorated with colorful cartoon charms. He continues to enjoy watching sports, Marvel movies and video games during his free time while balancing the strict discipline of monastic life.
Dorje was identified as a special spiritual figure when he was only four months old. Senior Tibetan Buddhist masters later confirmed him as the eighth Terchen Taksham Rinpoche, a spiritual lineage that dates back centuries. The Dalai Lama personally blessed him during a meeting in Wisconsin in 2010 and advised his parents to allow him to grow up in America before eventually joining monastery life.
Growing up, Dorje balanced two very different worlds. In the mornings, he memorized sacred Buddhist texts before going to school and football practice. At home, he continued lessons on Buddhism and Tibetan culture while also enjoying television shows, Pokémon cards and modern music like any other teenager.
Friends and teachers described him as calm, positive and respectful. He became known for encouraging teammates during football games and helping represent the Tibetan community at cultural events in Minnesota. He also developed a strong interest in journalism and writing during high school.
Life inside the monastery is very different from life in America. Dorje now follows a disciplined daily routine that includes prayers, meditation, chanting and lessons in Buddhist philosophy. He washes his own clothes by hand and eats simple meals of rice and lentils while living among monks from across Asia.
Despite the challenges, Dorje says he feels prepared for the path ahead. He hopes that after years of study and spiritual practice, he will return to the United States to teach Buddhism and support the Tibetan community in Minnesota. Inspired by leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela and the Dalai Lama, he says his goal is to become a leader who promotes peace and compassion.
