The United States has announced new sanctions on Cuba through an executive order issued under a national emergency, signaling increased pressure on the Caribbean nation. While the order doesn’t detail specific tariffs or identify countries affected, it marks a sharper approach toward Cuba amid ongoing political tensions.
Cuba’s government swiftly responded, expressing alarm that these measures could severely disrupt critical services like electricity, farming, water access, and healthcare, which are already strained by the country’s economic hardships. Officials described the US action as an attempt to stifle everyday life and accused Washington of pursuing a policy that could devastate the Cuban population.
This move follows heightened US actions in the region, including the recent capture of Venezuela’s former leader, Nicolas Maduro, which has emboldened American efforts to challenge Cuba’s leadership. President Trump recently warned that Cuba’s economy is on the brink of collapse, especially after Venezuela, once Cuba’s main oil source, stopped shipments. Since then, Mexico has become Cuba’s largest oil supplier but is reportedly reconsidering continued deliveries amid fears of US backlash.
Throughout his term, President Trump has frequently wielded tariffs and sanctions as strategic tools to influence foreign policy. Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel condemned the sanctions, rejecting the US’s right to impose conditions on Cuba, a country governed by its communist system.
This latest round of sanctions highlights escalating tensions and raises concerns about the deepening economic struggles facing Cuba.
