Major Gun Trafficking Network Exposed Between U.S. and Canada

Major Gun Trafficking Network Exposed Between U.S. and Canada

Post by : Shweta

Authorities in the United States have identified a significant gun trafficking operation that allegedly funneled illegal firearms from New Hampshire into Canada, particularly through border areas adjacent to tribal lands in New York. Federal law enforcement announced that 13 individuals face charges or have entered guilty pleas related to this international smuggling ring.

U.S. prosecutors claim that this network was active from 2021 and likely continued through late 2024. The group reportedly relied on “straw purchasers,” individuals who legally acquired firearms for those barred from ownership. More than 51 firearms are believed to have crossed the border via the Akwesasne Mohawk territory, which spans parts of New York, Ontario, and Quebec.

Some of these illegally transported weapons have been linked to violent crimes in Canada, including cases of kidnapping and attempted murder in Montreal. Law enforcement agencies from both nations collaborated extensively during this probe, with involvement from U.S. Homeland Security Investigations, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and various Canadian police forces.

U.S. Attorney Erin Creegan characterized the operation as a notable international trafficking circuit exploiting the northern border “as a pipeline for illegal gun trade.” Many firearms were reportedly sourced from licensed dealers in New Hampshire and neighboring areas, then transported into Canada via remote crossings and reservation routes.

Court filings claim that key figures in the trafficking network recruited individuals in New Hampshire and Vermont to purchase firearms. Investigators identified a suspect named Justin Jackson, who was forbidden from legally buying weapons, prompting others to make purchases on his behalf. A number of defendants have already accepted guilty pleas for firearms trafficking and illegal possession.

Earlier this week, authorities detained four suspects connected to the case, while others remain at large. Prosecutors noted that the operation involved strategically planned transport routes through secluded border regions to evade detection.

Canadian law enforcement has expressed heightened concern over the influx of illegal firearms from the U.S. into Canada. Investigators report that a substantial portion of handguns seized in crimes throughout major Canadian cities are traced back to smuggling operations associated with the U.S. border.

This investigation has reignited discussions about cross-border gun trafficking and its implications for public safety in Canada. Police agencies have consistently warned of organized crime’s reliance on illegally imported American firearms, attributed to the stricter gun laws in Canada compared to many U.S. states. Experts highlight that trafficked weapons present a significant hurdle for law enforcement, particularly in Ontario and Quebec.

Officials from both the U.S. and Canada reiterated that the investigation remains ongoing, with potential for more arrests and charges as authorities continue to trace firearms associated with the smuggling operation. Both nations also plan to enhance cooperation at the border to thwart future illegal gun trafficking incidents impacting Canadian communities.
