The United States has recently given the go-ahead for the sale of 5,250 Patriot missile interceptors to Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. This strategic move is aimed at bolstering the missile capabilities of these Gulf states in light of increasing tensions across West Asia.
This decision comes at a time when worldwide supplies of Patriot interceptors are under pressure, driving a sharp increase in demand for the US-manufactured air defense systems this year.
The approved transaction primarily seeks to enhance the missile inventories of the four Gulf states, as global calls for air defense systems continue to rise.
Simultaneously, discussions are ongoing in Washington concerning a proposal that could enable Ukraine to produce Patriot interceptors, according to knowledgeable sources.
While US President Donald Trump has noted he has not yet sanctioned such an agreement, conversations are advancing.
One potential proposal involves Ukraine producing key components, with final assembly conducted elsewhere in Europe, insiders have reported.
In line with the rising demand for Patriot interceptors, the United States has entered into a significant production agreement.
Last month, the US Army awarded Lockheed Martin a contract potentially worth up to $58.6 billion for the production of Patriot interceptor missiles.
First deployed during the Gulf War in 1991, the Patriot air defense system has seen a marked increase in demand this year.
The ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict has intensified pressure on the supply of Patriot missiles, with Ukraine urgently requiring additional interceptors to shield against ongoing Russian missile strikes.
Additionally, the Iran situation has led to diminished missile inventories within the US and Gulf regions, as several European nations retain their stocks for domestic needs.
This combination of factors has led to heightened competition among nations striving to secure adequate air defense resources.
The Patriot system performs distinct functions depending on the interceptor model deployed.
The earlier PAC-2 interceptor employs a blast-fragmentation warhead that detonates near its target, whereas the PAC-3 variant utilizes a unique 'hit-to-kill' technology, designed to collide directly with incoming threats.
This versatility allows the Patriot system to address various threat profiles effectively.
In July of this year, Lockheed Martin unveiled a new interceptor designated the PAC-3 Adapted Capability Effector, or PAC-3 ACE.
Lockheed Martin asserts that this new interceptor will be approximately half the cost while still capable of tackling short-range ballistic missiles, aircraft, and cruise missiles.
The radar of the Patriot system boasts a detection range exceeding 150 km (93 miles), with NATO reporting in 2015 that it can simultaneously monitor up to 100 potential targets.
The cost for a newly created Patriot battery exceeds $1 billion, as outlined by the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).
Of this total, approximately $400 million is allocated for the system itself, while around $690 million accounts for the missiles included in a battery.
Each Patriot PAC-3 interceptor is estimated to cost between $4 million and $5 million.
