The Utah Mammoth are set to face off against the New York Islanders this Friday in Salt Lake City, aiming to curb the outstanding performance of rookie Matthew Schaefer.
The Islanders enter this contest on a roll, winning their last three games, including a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory against the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday. Jean-Gabriel Pageau clinched the win with a short-handed goal at 3:02 of overtime, marking the team’s second consecutive triumph in extra time.
On the other hand, the Mammoth recently halted a three-game slide with a commanding 5-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday. They made a remarkable comeback from a 2-0 deficit by netting four goals in the third period.
Schaefer's Ascendant Career
Matthew Schaefer, the first overall pick in this year’s draft, is proving his worth on the ice. He recorded a goal and an assist in the Islanders' victory over Vegas, bringing his total to 14 points (six goals and eight assists) over 17 games. This early success ranks him third all-time for 18-year-old defensemen, equaling Ray Bourque’s 14 points in 19 games and only trailing Phil Housley’s 16 points.
“We never stopped fighting,” said Schaefer. “We came out strong, and our goalie Sorokin made crucial saves. Having a goalie like that really counts.”
Islanders’ Collaborative Effort
Mathew Barzal played a crucial role by scoring the equalizer with just 2:37 left in regulation. Emil Heineman also contributed a goal, while Bo Horvat maintained his point streak at seven games with two assists. Goalie Ilya Sorokin recorded 26 saves, including three in overtime. The Islanders are expected to start David Rittich, who holds a record of 3-2-0 this season with a goals-against average of 3.41.
Mammoth Strong Performance at Home
JJ Peterka, Nick Schmaltz, and Clayton Keller each netted a goal and an assist during Utah's win against Buffalo, with Karel Vejmelka making 17 saves. A total of 11 players scored, including four defensemen, contributing to 37 points from the blue line so far this season.
“We emphasize being aggressive and sending pucks to the middle,” noted defenseman Nick DeSimone, who scored his first goal of the season. “We aim to reward our forwards as they drive toward the net and maximize our scoring opportunities.”
Utah’s comeback win against Buffalo was their first of the season and the sixth overall. Now standing at 5-1-0 at home, they rely heavily on solid defensive strategies. Coach Andre Tourigny commented, “We defend with agility, forcing opponents into swift decision-making. That’s one of our key strengths.”
The teams faced off twice last season, with Utah edging out a 5-4 win on Long Island and New York securing a narrow 2-1 victory in Salt Lake City. Vejmelka holds a 2-2 record against New York with a 2.02 GAA and .931 save percentage.
This Friday’s encounter stands to be a pivotal clash, showcasing a home team eager for positive momentum while spotlighting a rookie defenseman on the rise.
