In a major operation against illegal alcohol trade, Vadodara Police destroyed more than one lakh bottles of seized liquor and beer worth over ₹4 crore on Thursday. The action was carried out as part of ongoing efforts to enforce Gujarat’s strict prohibition laws.
The destruction exercise took place under official supervision, with heavy machinery and bulldozers used to crush the confiscated stock. Authorities said the liquor had been seized during multiple raids and enforcement operations conducted across the city.
Seized Stock Collected From 15 Police Stations
According to police officials, the destroyed liquor was gathered from 15 different police stations in Vadodara. The stock had been recovered from various cases linked to bootlegging, illegal transportation, and unlawful sale of alcohol.
The large-scale disposal was conducted after completing the required legal procedures and documentation related to the seized contraband.
Police Reaffirm Commitment Against Bootlegging
Deputy Commissioner of Police Dr. J.M. Chavda said the operation demonstrates the department’s strong commitment to eliminating illegal liquor networks operating in the region.
He stated that law enforcement agencies will continue taking strict action against individuals and groups involved in alcohol smuggling and other activities that violate state prohibition laws.

Gujarat Continues Strict Prohibition Policy
Gujarat remains one of the few Indian states where the manufacture, sale, and consumption of alcohol are prohibited without special permits. The prohibition policy has been in force since 1960 and is regularly enforced through police operations and surveillance.
Authorities said such actions are necessary to ensure compliance with the law and prevent illegal alcohol from reaching consumers.
Public Disposal Meant as Deterrent
Police officials explained that publicly destroying confiscated liquor serves as a warning to bootleggers and those involved in illegal alcohol trade. The move is intended to discourage future violations and strengthen public confidence in law enforcement efforts.
Officials also noted that eliminating seized stock reduces the risk of harmful or counterfeit liquor re-entering the market.
Social Media Reactions Emerge
The destruction of such a large quantity of alcohol has generated discussion on social media, with some users questioning whether alternative measures could have been considered.
However, authorities emphasized that disposal of confiscated contraband is a standard legal procedure and remains an important part of maintaining public safety and enforcing state laws.
Continued Action Expected
Police officials said operations against illegal liquor smuggling will continue across Gujarat. They added that intelligence-based raids and coordinated enforcement drives are being carried out regularly to identify and dismantle bootlegging networks operating in the state.
