Vernon Implements Water Feature Shutdown to Promote Conservation

Vernon Implements Water Feature Shutdown to Promote Conservation

Post by : Shweta

In light of pressing water supply concerns, the City of Vernon has rolled out crucial initiatives aimed at curbing unnecessary water usage following the Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) designation of the Greater Vernon area under Stage 3 water restrictions. These efforts are targeted at achieving a 50% reduction in overall water consumption.

City officials have made it clear that water resources will be directed towards essential public spaces such as parks, sports fields, and active green areas. Consequently, various water-related features and services will be temporarily paused.

Among the specific measures taken, misting stations at Civic Memorial Park and spray features at Lakeview Park have been shut down. The water features in local parks like Sawicki, Wenger, and Armory have also ceased operations. Officials emphasize that these closures are pivotal in reaching the conservation goals outlined by the Stage 3 restrictions.

The Clean Team of the City has adjusted its protocols as well. Regular pressure washing will be put on hold, with crews only dispatched for urgent issues such as biohazard removal or graffiti clean-up. This approach is to minimize unnecessary water utilization while ensuring public safety.

Moreover, tree care practices will shift significantly, as municipal trees will now exclusively receive reclaimed water instead of treated drinking water. This strategy is part of a broader effort to safeguard potable water supplies.

Officials indicate that some shut-down water features could reopen during extreme heat conditions, contingent upon the guidance of the Emergency Operations Centre or the approval of the Regional District of North Okanagan.

Despite the restrictions, public swimming facilities remain operational. Residents can still access the Vernon Recreation Centre and both outdoor pools at Lakeview and Lavington, serving as vital recreational spaces during hot weather.

The city is also refining its irrigation practices to sustain sports facilities while achieving water reduction objectives. Watering will solely focus on active playing fields, leading to a temporary halt on watering non-essential parks.

Marshall Fields and the grounds of the Department of National Defence will continue to function fully, using high-quality reclaimed water for their irrigation needs without straining the community's drinking water supply.

Officials are actively seeking ways to broaden the use of reclaimed and treated wastewater for municipal activities. Alternative measures, including water hauling, are also under evaluation to support essential services should water shortages escalate.

These steps reflect heightened anxieties regarding water availability in the region and underline the critical need for conservation during peak demand periods. Municipal authorities urge residents to adhere to water restrictions and use water wisely.

As the situation develops, both the City of Vernon and the Regional District of North Okanagan will closely monitor water supplies and determine if further conservation actions are warranted. The push for increased reclaimed water usage and securing alternative water sources will be vital for maintaining necessary operations throughout the summer months.

Stay tuned for essential updates and further developments.
