India’s Supreme Court Allows Euthanasia for Coma Patient After 13 Years

Post by : Shakul

A deeply emotional case from Ghaziabad has drawn national attention after India’s Supreme Court allowed euthanasia for a man who had been bedridden for more than a decade.

32-year-old Harish Rana has been in a coma since a tragic accident in 2013 that left him with quadriplegia and 100% disability. Since then, he has remained completely dependent on medical support, including feeding tubes and life-support equipment.

After years of watching their son suffer, Harish’s parents approached the courts seeking euthanasia, saying they now pray not for a longer life but for his release from pain.

The plea was initially rejected by the Allahabad High Court in July 2024. However, the case later reached the Supreme Court of India, which has now granted permission for euthanasia.

For 13 years, the family stood by his bedside, witnessing his silent struggle. The court’s decision may now bring the closure and peace the family has been waiting for.
