The Secret Gas Reserve That Could Power India

Post by : Shakul

Oil India Limited (OIL) has announced a significant natural gas discovery at the Sri Vijayapuram-3 exploratory well in the Andaman Sea, marking another milestone in India's offshore energy exploration efforts. The well is located approximately 15 kilometers off the eastern coast of the Andaman Islands at a water depth of around 355 meters.

The discovery represents the second successful hydrocarbon find during the ongoing exploration campaign in the Andaman Basin. According to the company, initial testing at the site recorded continuous gas flaring, indicating the presence of commercially promising natural gas reserves beneath the seabed.

Energy experts believe the latest discovery could strengthen India's efforts to enhance domestic energy production and reduce dependence on imported oil and gas. The Andaman Basin has increasingly attracted attention due to its geological similarities with some of the world's most productive offshore hydrocarbon regions.

The find is being viewed as a major achievement under the Government of India's Samudra Manthan deepwater exploration mission, which aims to unlock untapped offshore energy resources and improve the country's long-term energy security.

Officials noted that further appraisal and testing activities will be carried out to determine the full extent and commercial viability of the gas reserves. The results will help shape future development plans for the region.
