A Vietnam Airlines flight bound for Hanoi returned to Munich Airport on Saturday, August 16, after experiencing a technical issue shortly after takeoff, the airline and Munich Airport said.
The aircraft, a Boeing 787, spent more than two hours circling before landing back at Munich Airport. Flight-tracking website Flightradar24 reported that the aircraft had apparently overrun the runway during takeoff and later flew in circles to burn fuel.
Vietnam Airlines said the flight returned to its departure airport because of a “technical issue”. The airline did not provide further details about the problem.
The airline said the flight crew followed all required procedures and completed the landing safely at Munich Airport.
“All passengers and cabin crew members are safe,” Vietnam Airlines said.
Video aired by U.S.-based reports showed the aircraft taking off with a large cloud of dust visible behind it.
Following the landing, Munich Airport said the Boeing 787 was unable to move away from the north runway under its own power and remained there.
The situation led to the closure of the north runway, with air traffic redirected through the south runway, according to the airport.
Vietnam Airlines said it was working with the relevant authorities and other parties to inspect the aircraft.
The airline said it would provide further information once the inspection results were available and specific operational plans had been determined.
