Vietnamese police have rescued more than 500 cats after dismantling a major animal theft and cat meat trafficking network operating in southern Vietnam. The operation, carried out in Ho Chi Minh City, led to the detention of nine suspects and exposed one of the country's largest animal welfare cases in recent years.
Hundreds of Cats Found in Harsh Conditions
Authorities discovered around 400 live cats packed inside 45 cages during raids at multiple locations. Officers also found approximately 80 dead cats stored in ice-filled containers and recovered additional live animals from a separate site. Animal welfare groups reported that nearly 100 rescued cats later died due to the severe conditions in which they had been kept.
Families Reunited With Missing Pets
The rescue operation brought relief to many pet owners, with more than 40 cats successfully reunited with their families. Volunteers and animal welfare organizations have been working to identify surviving animals and reconnect them with owners who had reported their pets missing.
Investigation Linked to Rising Pet Thefts
Police launched the investigation after receiving reports of increasing pet thefts across Ho Chi Minh City. According to authorities, the suspects admitted to trapping and collecting cats from several provinces and cities over the past three years before selling them into the cat meat trade.
Animal Welfare Groups Raise Concerns
Animal welfare advocates described the case as a reminder of the scale of the illegal pet trafficking industry in Vietnam. Organizations assisting in the rescue operation said veterinarians and volunteers have been working around the clock to provide treatment, shelter, and care for the surviving animals.
Legal Debate Over Cat Meat Trade
While the consumption of cat meat remains legal in Vietnam under certain regulations, growing public concern has led some cities to work with international groups to discourage the practice. Authorities have also indicated plans to strengthen legal protections for pets and their owners in the future.
Calls for Stronger Animal Protection
The case has sparked renewed discussions about animal welfare laws and pet protection measures in Vietnam. Activists hope the rescue operation will encourage tougher action against animal theft networks and improve safeguards for domestic animals across the country.
