Vietnam’s 2026 high school graduation examination is witnessing a significant transformation in student subject choices, with a growing number of candidates selecting STEM and technology-related subjects while moving away from traditional subject combinations. Education officials say the trend reflects stronger career-oriented learning and the influence of the 2018 General Education Program.
According to data released by Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training, subjects linked to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics have recorded remarkable growth in registrations. The increase indicates that students are making decisions based on personal strengths, future career goals, and labor market demands rather than following conventional academic pathways.
One of the most notable developments is the sharp rise in registrations for technology-focused subjects. Informatics recorded a 142 percent increase in candidate registrations, while Industrial Technology surged by 205 percent. Agricultural Technology also posted strong growth, demonstrating rising interest in fields connected to innovation, digital transformation, and modern industry.
Officials believe the trend highlights the success of career guidance programs implemented in schools. Students are increasingly choosing subjects that align with their ambitions and professional aspirations. This shift is helping create a more diverse examination structure and encouraging learners to build specialized knowledge in areas that match their future goals.
Despite the rapid growth of STEM-related subjects, social sciences continue to maintain a strong position within the education system. History emerged as the most popular elective subject in 2026, attracting more than 570,000 candidates. Economic and Legal Education also remained highly popular, reflecting growing interest in civic knowledge, economics, and legal awareness among young learners.
Another key achievement of the 2026 examination cycle is the success of digital transformation initiatives. More than 1.2 million students completed online exam registration, representing nearly 98.5 percent of all candidates. The widespread adoption of digital systems demonstrates significant progress in education management and exam administration across the country.
Education experts believe these changes signal a positive evolution in Vietnam’s education landscape. The growing balance between STEM education, social sciences, career guidance, and digital learning is expected to contribute to the development of a highly skilled workforce capable of meeting future economic and technological challenges while supporting national development goals.
