Vietnam has announced a major incentive for electric vehicle buyers by extending the 0% initial registration fee for battery-powered electric cars until December 31, 2030. The move is aimed at accelerating the country’s transition toward cleaner transportation and reducing environmental pollution.
The policy was introduced through Government Decree 202/2026/ND-CP, issued on June 8, 2026. The decree amends existing vehicle registration regulations and continues the preferential treatment for battery-powered electric vehicles, allowing buyers to register their vehicles without paying the initial registration fee.
According to Vietnamese authorities, the extension is part of a broader strategy to encourage consumers to switch from traditional gasoline-powered vehicles to environmentally friendly alternatives. Officials believe the measure will help reduce emissions, improve air quality, and support national climate goals.
The government noted that previous incentives introduced in 2022 had already produced positive results. The policy boosted consumer interest in electric vehicles, encouraged manufacturers to expand production, and helped strengthen the domestic electric mobility market.
Vietnam’s Ministry of Finance stated that the global electric vehicle industry has experienced rapid growth over the past few years. Worldwide EV sales surpassed 17 million units in 2024 and are expected to exceed 20 million units in 2025, reflecting the growing shift toward sustainable transportation solutions.
Officials also highlighted the importance of reducing financial barriers for buyers. Registration fee exemptions and tax incentives have become common tools used by governments worldwide to promote electric vehicle adoption and support the development of charging infrastructure.
The new decree is expected to provide long-term confidence to consumers, manufacturers, and investors while helping Vietnam advance its green transportation agenda. Authorities believe the extension will play a key role in accelerating the country's transition to cleaner mobility and achieving sustainable economic development goals.
