Vietnam’s government has ordered urgent action to speed up delayed energy and electricity projects as concerns grow over future power shortages amid rising economic demand. Standing Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc chaired a high-level meeting in Hanoi to review the implementation of the revised National Power Development Plan VIII and key national energy projects.
During the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc stressed that stable electricity supply is essential for achieving Vietnam’s ambitious economic growth targets. He warned that delays in major energy projects could threaten national energy security and negatively affect industrial growth, digital transformation, and high-tech development across the country.
The Deputy Prime Minister said electricity demand is increasing rapidly due to the expansion of manufacturing industries, data centers, scientific research facilities, and green energy projects. He instructed ministries, local authorities, and energy corporations to immediately remove obstacles delaying projects and ensure that key energy infrastructure is completed on time.
According to reports presented at the meeting, several major power generation and transmission projects are already behind schedule. Officials from the Ministry of Industry and Trade warned that if immediate solutions are not implemented, Vietnam could face electricity shortages during the 2027-2030 period. Authorities also noted that land clearance issues, complicated investment procedures, and weak coordination between agencies continue to slow project implementation.
Minister of Industry and Trade Le Manh Hung emphasized that energy security is not only about producing enough electricity but also ensuring stable operations during emergencies while keeping electricity prices affordable for citizens and businesses. The ministry proposed expanding renewable energy projects, battery energy storage systems, offshore wind power, and modern coal-fired plants equipped with carbon capture technology.
Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc instructed authorities to review all projects included in the national power development plan and remove projects that are unlikely to be completed on schedule. He called for stronger supervision of investors and local governments responsible for delays and warned that strict action would be taken against projects failing to meet approved timelines.
The government also plans to introduce special mechanisms to accelerate urgent energy projects, simplify administrative procedures, and prioritize electricity transmission lines that can improve power distribution and support electricity imports when necessary. Officials were instructed to create flexible emergency plans to ensure continuous electricity supply under all circumstances.
Pham Gia Tuc emphasized that Vietnam cannot allow power shortages while the country pursues rapid economic growth and industrial modernization. He said the Ministry of Industry and Trade would be held directly responsible for ensuring energy security and timely implementation of major projects under the revised Power Development Plan VIII.
The meeting concluded with calls for stronger coordination between ministries, provinces, corporations, and investors to ensure all national energy projects move forward more efficiently and contribute to Vietnam’s long-term economic and sustainable development goals.
