Flash Flood in Vietnam Leaves 4 Dead, 4 Missing, 7 Injured

Flash Flood in Vietnam Leaves 4 Dead, 4 Missing, 7 Injured

Post by : Badri Ariffin

A powerful flash flood triggered by days of relentless rainfall has claimed the lives of at least four people and left four others missing in northern Vietnam's mountainous Lai Chau province. The disaster struck Muong Than village early on Friday, July 17, causing widespread destruction and prompting emergency rescue operations.

According to the Vietnam News Agency, the sudden flood also injured seven people as rushing water swept through the village following continuous heavy rainfall across several parts of northern Vietnam. Rescue teams have been deployed to search for the missing while local authorities continue assessing the damage.

Images released by state media showed thick layers of red mud covering homes and roads, with large rocks, fallen trees and debris scattered across the area. Several roads were severely damaged, making rescue and relief efforts more challenging.

Heavy Rain Triggers Landslides and Widespread Damage

Since July 15, northern Vietnam has experienced persistent heavy rain, leading to multiple landslides and flash floods across the region. According to the country's disaster management agency, the severe weather has caused extensive damage to infrastructure, including roads, electricity networks and hundreds of homes.

The flooding has also submerged around 238 hectares of agricultural land, raising concerns over crop losses and the livelihoods of local farmers. Authorities are working to restore essential services while providing assistance to affected communities.

More Rain Forecast Across Northern Vietnam

Weather officials have warned that the dangerous conditions are far from over. Several northern provinces are expected to receive up to 250 millimetres of rainfall on Saturday, July 18, significantly increasing the risk of additional flash floods and landslides.

Residents living in mountainous and low-lying areas have been advised to remain alert, follow evacuation orders and avoid travelling through flood-prone regions as emergency teams remain on standby.

Vietnam Faces Seasonal Flood Threat Every Year

Vietnam regularly experiences severe storms, floods and landslides during its annual rainy season, which typically lasts from July to September. The country's mountainous northern regions are especially vulnerable to flash floods due to steep terrain and intense monsoon rainfall.

Government data shows that natural disasters, primarily floods and landslides, claimed 489 lives across Vietnam last year, highlighting the country's ongoing struggle with extreme weather events and climate-related disasters.

As rescue operations continue in Lai Chau province, authorities are closely monitoring weather conditions and preparing for the possibility of further flooding in the coming days.
