Vietnam and South Korea have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral defence relations and expanding cooperation across multiple sectors following a high-level meeting in Hanoi. The discussions reflected the growing importance of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations and highlighted the progress achieved in recent years.
On the morning of June 2, 2026, General Phan Van Giang, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence of Vietnam, received South Korean Ambassador Choi Young Sam at the Ministry of National Defense headquarters in Hanoi. The meeting took place as a farewell visit marking the completion of Ambassador Choi’s diplomatic mission in Vietnam.
During the meeting, General Phan Van Giang congratulated Ambassador Choi Young Sam on the successful completion of his tenure and praised his contributions to strengthening Vietnam–South Korea relations. He noted that the ambassador had played an important role in promoting cooperation in various fields, including defence, trade, cultural exchange, and people-to-people connections.
The Vietnamese Defence Minister reaffirmed Vietnam’s strong commitment to the comprehensive strategic partnership shared by the two countries. He highlighted the significance of recent high-level exchanges, including the state visit to South Korea by Vietnamese leader To Lam in August 2025 and the state visit to Vietnam by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung in April 2026. According to him, these visits produced meaningful outcomes that continue to advance bilateral relations toward a shared and prosperous future.
Reviewing defence cooperation, General Phan Van Giang emphasized that collaboration between the two countries has expanded steadily in recent years. Areas of cooperation include military education and training, naval exchanges, defence industry development, and post-war recovery efforts. He also expressed appreciation for South Korea’s continued support in addressing the consequences of war in Vietnam through humanitarian and development projects.
Particular attention was given to mine-action initiatives supported by South Korea, including projects in Binh Dinh and Quang Binh provinces. General Phan Van Giang thanked the South Korean government for its assistance and expressed hope that cooperation in post-war recovery activities would continue in the years ahead. He also extended an invitation to South Korean defence industry companies to participate in the Third Vietnam International Defense Exhibition, which is scheduled to take place in December 2026.
Ambassador Choi Young Sam thanked the Vietnamese leadership for its support during his tenure and expressed satisfaction with the growth of bilateral relations. He noted that both countries have strengthened cooperation through defence policy dialogues, officer exchanges, naval visits, economic partnerships, and cultural programs. The ambassador pledged that in his future roles he would continue supporting efforts to deepen cooperation between Vietnam and South Korea and help elevate the relationship to new heights.
