Danish badminton sensation Viktor Axelsen, residing in Dubai, has announced his retirement from professional badminton, concluding a stellar career marked by numerous accolades. The 32-year-old revealed persistent back issues as the core reason for this decision, confessing it hinders him from competing at peak performance.
A two-time Olympic gold medalist at the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympics, Axelsen disclosed that despite having back surgery in April, his recovery hasn’t been sufficient.
“This acceptance has been incredibly tough, but I’ve realized my body no longer supports my ambitions,” Axelsen expressed in a heartfelt announcement.
Considered among the sport's greatest, Axelsen exits with an unmatched legacy, highlighted by two World Championship titles and a bronze at the Rio 2016 Olympics. His remarkable tenure included over 100 weeks as the world No. 1, a record second only to Malaysian legend Lee Chong Wei.
At 194 cm, Axelsen transformed badminton with his exceptional reach, athletic prowess, and strategic intellect. Beyond the game, his charm was evident as he spoke fluent Mandarin, further endearing him to fans globally.
Since August 2021, Axelsen has been training in Dubai's Nad Al Sheba Sports Complex, a strategic move inspired by logistical advantages for Asian tournaments and superior training resources.
His health concerns, including asthma and acute rhinitis, are more manageable in Dubai’s warmer climate, contrasting with colder European conditions.
Reflecting on his journey, Axelsen stated he has achieved all his dreams, echoing, “I have dedicated my life to this sport, leaving no effort unmade.”
His retirement signifies the end of an illustrious chapter in badminton history, remembered not merely for his titles but for propelling the sport to new heights.
