The Colorado Rockies have officially named Warren Schaeffer as their full-time manager, a decision announced on Monday. Schaeffer has been leading the team on an interim basis since May, when Bud Black was relieved of his duties following a challenging start that saw the Rockies go 7-33. Black, the franchise's winningest manager, faced mounting pressure due to the team's struggles.
Finishing this past season with a record of 43-119 and placing last in the NL West, Schaeffer expressed gratitude for the opportunity to guide the team further. He aims to foster a positive and accountable environment that emphasizes teamwork and continuous growth. Schaeffer appreciates the commitment of the players to competing fairly and aspires to enhance trust and collaboration among the team, ensuring fans take pride in their performance.
Now the eighth full-time manager in Rockies history, 40-year-old Schaeffer has spent over a decade within the organization, allowing him deep insight into the team’s values and culture. Rockies President of Baseball Operations, Paul DePodesta, expressed confidence in Schaeffer's ability to lead the team moving forward, noting his strong rapport with players and his vibrant coaching style.
Black, who was let go earlier in the season, had guided the Rockies to playoff appearances in 2017 and 2018 but the team has struggled to maintain a winning record since. His contract was due to end this season, despite having signed a one-year extension in October. Over nine seasons, Black recorded a 544-690 record as the Rockies' manager.
Schaeffer’s promotion is just one aspect of a larger reconstruction effort within the Rockies organization, which also recently brought in Paul DePodesta as a significant front-office addition. Previously with the NFL's Cleveland Browns for nearly a decade, DePodesta is recognized for his analytics-driven sports management style, famously characterized by the film “Moneyball,” which portrayed a fictional version of him.
Before transitioning to football, DePodesta devoted almost twenty years to Major League Baseball, becoming the only executive to achieve division titles with five franchises, including the Mets and Dodgers. He steps into the Rockies organization following the departure of Bill Schmidt from his previous role.
The Rockies are optimistic that these leadership changes, including Schaeffer's promotion and DePodesta's hiring, will help alter the future trajectory of the club. They recently made history by becoming the first MLB team to record three consecutive seasons with over 100 losses since the Astros did the same from 2011 to 2013. With new leadership in place, Colorado is determined to establish a stronger foundation and foster a competitive spirit.
As these changes unfold, the Rockies are confident they have the right individuals to steer them through this extensive rebuilding period. The organization looks forward to the combination of Schaeffer’s guidance and DePodesta’s expertise contributing to a more stable and optimistic future, laying the groundwork for culture, effort, and player development.
