In the heart of Washington, several foreign embassies stand abandoned, reflecting the consequences of years of evolving diplomatic relationships and political conflict. The responsibility to maintain these buildings falls to the State Department, even when diplomatic ties with these nations have been severed.
A notable instance is the Syrian embassy, which ceased operations in 2014 amidst the civil war. Recently, the US announced a symbolic reopening after a visit from Syria's new president, yet the structure remains in disrepair. Former Syrian diplomat Bassam Barabandi noted that restoring the embassy could take years, with the site showcasing overgrown plants and deteriorating interiors due to neglected upkeep.
Meanwhile, the Afghan embassy in Kalorama sits vacant since the Taliban took control in 2021. Postal worker Trina Thompson recalled the building being marked absent from her deliveries by March 2022. Former Afghan Deputy Ambassador Abdul Hadi Nejrabi noted the somber act of returning the keys to the US State Department, ending consular services for Afghan nationals in the capital.
The State Department's Office of Foreign Missions maintains a duty to protect embassies, even when relations are non-existent. Per the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, nations are obliged to uphold the sanctity of foreign diplomatic missions.
As it stands, the US oversees 29 such properties, which include three Afghan embassies, six Venezuelan, and eleven Iranian. The diplomatic ties with these nations are currently absent. Additionally, Chinese and Russian embassies are on the list, though some Russian properties face restrictions due to previous political tensions. The Russian government has condemned these limitations as illegal under the Vienna Convention, describing them as “bordering on theft.”
The Iranian embassy has remained unoccupied since 1980, following the Islamic Revolution. Once a center for diplomatic activities, it now serves as a stark illustration of the enduring tensions between the US and Iran. Similarly, abandoned Venezuelan embassies underscore the long-term repercussions of interrupted diplomatic dialogues.
The vacant embassies illustrate how geopolitical changes and diplomatic disagreements can leave notable spaces neglected, symbolizing decades of international discord within Washington, DC.
