Japan captain Wataru Endo is battling to recover in time for his country's opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 against the Netherlands. The experienced midfielder is currently dealing with a lingering foot injury that has limited his participation in training and raised concerns over his availability for the crucial Group F encounter.
The Liverpool midfielder has not taken part in any full training sessions during Japan's pre-tournament preparations in Mexico. However, after the team arrived at its World Cup base in Nashville, Endo was able to participate in light running and passing drills alongside his teammates, offering a glimmer of hope for the Japanese camp.
Head coach Hajime Moriyasu remains optimistic despite the uncertainty surrounding his captain's fitness. According to the coach, medical assessments have not ruled Endo out of action, and the team is continuing to monitor his recovery closely ahead of the opening fixture in Dallas.
Endo suffered a serious foot injury while playing for Liverpool against Sunderland in February, an injury that prematurely ended his club season. Although he returned to action in Japan's recent friendly victory over Iceland, he experienced discomfort and was substituted at halftime, indicating that the recovery process is still ongoing.
Moriyasu acknowledged that squad replacements remain an option if Endo is ultimately unable to compete. The coach stressed that the situation is being evaluated carefully, particularly as several members of the squad are returning from injuries and require ongoing medical assessment before the tournament begins.
Japan enters the World Cup with high expectations and faces a challenging Group F that includes the Netherlands, Sweden and Tunisia. The potential absence of Endo, who provides leadership, defensive stability and vast international experience, could be a significant setback for the Samurai Blue.
The team has already suffered injury-related losses before the tournament. Brighton winger Kaoru Mitoma was ruled out after sustaining a hamstring injury, while Monaco forward Takumi Minamino missed selection due to a long-term knee injury. As preparations continue, Japanese fans will be hoping Endo can make a timely recovery and lead the team onto the field for its World Cup opener.
