Bengal Begins Caste Certificate Review

Bengal Begins Caste Certificate Review

Post by : Shakul

The West Bengal government has ordered a fresh re-verification of all caste certificates issued in the state since 2011. The move comes after repeated allegations of corruption and irregularities in the issuance of caste certificates during the tenure of the previous government.

According to senior government officials, the State Backward Classes Welfare Department has already sent official letters to all district magistrates directing them to begin the verification process immediately. Authorities have been asked to carefully examine the authenticity of certificates issued over the last fifteen years.

Government sources said the re-verification drive aims to identify fake or illegally obtained caste certificates that may have been used for securing government jobs, educational admissions and welfare benefits meant for reserved categories.

Officials stated that district administrations will conduct document checks and field-level investigations wherever required. The government is expected to create a detailed database to ensure transparency and prevent misuse of reservation benefits in the future.

Political reactions have also started emerging after the announcement. Opposition leaders have demanded strict action against those involved in issuing fraudulent certificates, while some political parties questioned the timing of the exercise.

The state government maintained that the verification drive is necessary to protect the rights of genuine beneficiaries belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes. Authorities said the process will be carried out in accordance with legal and administrative guidelines.

Officials also clarified that genuine certificate holders should not panic, as the exercise is mainly focused on identifying irregularities and ensuring that reservation policies are implemented fairly across the state.

The re-verification process is expected to continue over the coming months, with district administrations likely to submit regular reports to the Backward Classes Welfare Department regarding the progress of the investigation.
