In a nail-biting finish, Andrew Wiggins sent the Miami Heat fans into a frenzy with a buzzer-beating dunk, sealing a dramatic 140-138 overtime victory against the Cleveland Cavaliers. With just 0.4 seconds remaining, Nikola Jovic executed a perfect lob-pass to Wiggins, who outmaneuvered his defender De’Andre Hunter for the game-winning slam. This victory marked the Heat's continued home dominance as they improved their record to 5-0.
Before Wiggins' heroic play, Cleveland's Donovan Mitchell attempted to extend the game by hitting a clutch three-pointer. With only 0.4 seconds to go, Mitchell hit a fading corner shot while narrowly avoiding stepping out of bounds and challenging Miami's 7-footer, Kel’el Ware. This moment ignited hope for the Cavaliers, but Miami's final play overshadowed it.
Norman Powell was outstanding for the Heat, finishing the game with 33 points. His offensive prowess was pivotal throughout critical stretches. Wiggins contributed 23 points, while Jaime Jaquez Jr. added 22 points and 13 rebounds, ensuring Miami stayed competitive throughout.
Kel’el Ware, the rookie center, excelled by grabbing a career-high 19 rebounds, playing a crucial role in countering Cleveland's aggressive rebounding efforts. The Cavaliers managed 27 offensive rebounds compared to Miami's 11, but Ware's defensive presence was significant in overtime.
This success brings attention to Miami's strong teamwork and energy, especially since they were without key players Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro due to injuries. The matchup highlighted the skills of two of the NBA’s premier offensive teams battling neck and neck until the final buzzer.
On the Cavaliers' side, Donovan Mitchell led the scoring chart with 28 points, supplemented by 15 rebounds and eight assists. De’Andre Hunter added 23 points while Evan Mobley contributed 21 points and 11 rebounds. However, missed free throws and defensive lapses during crunch time ultimately hindered their chances for victory.
Cleveland point guard Darius Garland returned from his toe injury, scoring 11 points in merely 19 minutes. Unfortunately, he re-injured his toe in the third quarter and did not return to the game, leaving the Cavaliers at a disadvantage.
Despite a rocky start, guard Sam Merrill found his rhythm in the fourth quarter, making four consecutive three-pointers to put the Cavaliers back in contention. His 12 points within 88 seconds provided a much-needed boost to his team.
With the fourth quarter igniting tension, the game was tied at 106-106 after Merrill’s streak. Evan Mobley’s go-ahead three-pointer and a block on Powell’s next shot added to the excitement. However, crucial missed free throws by Cleveland kept the game in balance, allowing Jaquez to tie things with a remarkable jump hook, forcing overtime at 128-128.
During the overtime period, both teams exchanged baskets, but Cleveland's errors from the free-throw line proved to be detrimental. Mobley's missed attempt potentially shifted the game's momentum. Miami played with composure, with Powell and Wiggins making critical contributions, culminating in Wiggins’ game-ending dunk as the clock ran out.
The Cavaliers' coach Kenny Atkinson was ejected in the third quarter after earning two technical fouls. His absence impacted Cleveland’s late-game discipline, particularly in defensive rotations and during free throw situations.
Despite missing key All-Stars, the Heat showcased remarkable chemistry and determination. The combined efforts of Powell, Wiggins, and Jaquez were pivotal in maintaining Miami's undefeated home streak.
The game will be remembered as one of the early highlights of the NBA season, with Wiggins' concluding dunk a testament to Miami's teamwork and resilience. With this win, the Heat continue to gain momentum as Cleveland aims to recover from this challenging loss.
