Fans gearing up to attend the World Cup matches in the United States must prepare for significantly increased transportation costs, which will add to the expense of their tickets.
Officials have announced that round-trip train fares from New York City to MetLife Stadium will reach approximately $150 on match days, a dramatic rise from the usual fare of $12.90 for the short 15-minute ride from Manhattan’s Penn Station.
MetLife Stadium, home to the New York Giants and Jets, is set to host eight World Cup matches, including the finale on July 19. With limited parking, an estimated 40,000 fans per match are expected to rely on public transit.
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill has backed the fare increase, citing its necessity to alleviate the transit system’s financial pressures. Transit officials estimate fan transportation costs during the tournament will hit $62 million, with just $14 million secured from external funding.
NJ Transit CEO Kris Kolluri emphasized, “This isn’t price gouging—we are merely recovering our costs.”
Varying Strategies in Different Cities
Transportation rates differ in other cities hosting matches. In Massachusetts, ticket prices for express buses to Gillette Stadium will be $95, while round-trip train fares will be at $80—four times the normal price.
Conversely, cities such as Los Angeles and Philadelphia have committed to keeping standard transit fares intact, facilitated by around $100 million in federal funding aimed at improving transportation services during the event.
More budget-friendly transportation options exist in places like Kansas City, where $15 round-trip shuttles are on offer, and Houston, which will maintain its current fares between $1.25 to $4.50 for buses and rail services.
FIFA in Dispute Over Fare Hikes
The spike in transportation charges has led to a disagreement with FIFA, which asserts that previous agreements mandated free transportation for fans. The organization has voiced its astonishment at New Jersey's fare increases, underlining its role in securing federal assistance for host cities.
Additionally, New York Governor Kathy Hochul criticized the fare hike, labeling it excessively high for such a brief journey.
Few Alternatives for Attendees
Costly alternatives persist for fans. Parking near the stadium, including spaces at the nearby American Dream Mall, is limited and runs at about $225 per spot, further adding to the financial burden for attendees.
