Xavi has officially taken charge of the Netherlands national football team, bringing to an end the Dutch Football Association's lengthy search for a new head coach. His appointment also strengthens a long-standing connection between Dutch football and the football philosophy that shaped Barcelona over several decades. Xavi replaces Ronald Koeman, who stepped down after the Netherlands were knocked out of the 2026 World Cup in the round of 32. The former Spain international has agreed to a four-year contract that will keep him in charge through the 2030 World Cup.
The appointment marks Xavi's return to management after he left Barcelona in 2024. He spent three seasons in charge of the Catalan club and guided them to the La Liga title in 2023 before departing following a disappointing run of results. As a player, Xavi was one of Spain's most influential midfielders and helped the country win the 2010 World Cup. He also spent the majority of his playing career at Barcelona, where he was heavily influenced by the club's distinctive possession-based style. His move to the Netherlands is particularly significant because of the deep links between Barcelona's football identity and Dutch coaching traditions.
Speaking after his appointment, Xavi said he felt a special connection with Dutch football because of his education at Barcelona's academy and the influence of legendary Dutch figures Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels. The former midfielder described himself as something of a “son of Dutch football” and said becoming head coach of the Netherlands was a major honour. The connection runs deep. Michels helped introduce the principles of Total Football to Barcelona, while Cruyff later became one of the club's most influential coaches and figures.
Cruyff's ideas also strongly influenced Pep Guardiola, under whom Xavi played between 2008 and 2012 at Barcelona. The philosophy emphasised possession, short passing, intelligent movement and quick recovery of the ball after losing possession. Xavi was also coached by Dutch managers Frank Rijkaard and Louis van Gaal during his Barcelona career. Van Gaal gave him his Barcelona first-team debut in 1998. Throughout his career, Xavi shared dressing rooms with several Dutch internationals, including Frank de Boer, Ronald de Boer, Marc Overmars and Patrick Kluivert.
The Dutch appointment came after a six-week search that attracted criticism from sections of the country's media. The football association approached several high-profile candidates, but received rejections from coaches including Arne Slot and Erik ten Hag. The association ultimately turned to Xavi, whose experience at Barcelona and long association with the Dutch-influenced football philosophy made him an attractive choice. He now becomes the first foreign coach to lead the Netherlands since Austria's Ernst Happel, who was in charge at the 1978 World Cup.
Xavi's first major task will be to build a team capable of competing strongly at the UEFA Euro 2028 and then the 2030 World Cup. The new Dutch coach will not have much time to settle in. The Netherlands are scheduled to play four Nations League matches during the September-October international window, facing Germany, Serbia twice and Greece. Those fixtures will give Xavi an early opportunity to establish his tactical approach, assess his squad and begin shaping the team for the next major international tournaments.

Xavi's appointment represents more than a change in leadership. It creates a symbolic link between the Netherlands' historic football philosophy and a coach who was deeply shaped by that same tradition at Barcelona. For Xavi, the challenge will now be to translate that philosophy into results with the Dutch national team. His four-year mandate provides time to build a competitive side, but expectations will be high as the Netherlands look toward the next European Championship and World Cup.
