Chinese President Xi Jinping has described relations between China and North Korea as being at a “new historical starting point” as he arrived in Pyongyang for a rare summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The visit marks Xi’s first international trip of 2026 and his first journey to North Korea in seven years, highlighting the strategic importance both countries place on their long-standing partnership.
Ahead of his arrival, Xi published a message in North Korea’s state newspaper emphasizing Beijing’s commitment to strengthening ties with its neighbor. He stated that China would continue expanding cooperation across political, economic, cultural, and strategic sectors while working together to safeguard regional stability and promote multilateral cooperation.
The summit comes at a significant moment for North Korea, which has been deepening trade and military relations with Russia in recent years. Increased economic exchanges and strategic cooperation have provided Pyongyang with greater confidence on the international stage, allowing it to strengthen its position amid ongoing geopolitical shifts in Northeast Asia.
Observers view Xi’s visit as an effort to reinforce traditional China-North Korea relations at a time when regional security challenges are intensifying. Analysts believe Beijing is seeking to maintain its influence in Pyongyang while ensuring stability along its northeastern border and countering growing strategic competition in the region.
The North Korean capital was decorated with Chinese and North Korean flags ahead of the visit, with welcome banners displayed across major avenues and landmarks. Chinese state media reported that Xi traveled with a high-level delegation that included Foreign Minister Wang Yi and other senior officials, underlining the significance of the diplomatic mission.
On the eve of the summit, North Korea showcased its expanding military capabilities by unveiling plans for a new 10,000-ton naval destroyer and reaffirming its commitment to strengthening its nuclear deterrent. The announcement was widely interpreted as a demonstration of national strength ahead of high-level discussions with Beijing.
The two-day summit is expected to focus on strategic cooperation, economic exchanges, regional security, and future development initiatives. As both nations seek to navigate a rapidly changing global landscape, the meeting could shape the next phase of China-North Korea relations and influence geopolitical developments across East Asia.
