Barcelona were pushed into a late recovery on Wednesday, salvaging a 3-3 draw away to Club Brugge in Champions League action. Brugge struck first at the Jan Breydel Stadium when Nicolo Tresoldi finished after a neat pass from winger Carlos Forbs, who repeatedly looked to exploit space behind Barcelona’s high defensive line.
Barça responded quickly: Ferran Torres converted a well-worked move created by Fermin López. Brugge then hit back as Forbs added a second for the hosts, before a Tzolis own goal brought the visitors level again. Teenager Lamine Yamal, shaking off a recent quiet spell, was central to Barcelona’s revival, crafting chances and supplying the assist for the leveller.
Defensive frailties were on display throughout. Jules Koundé and Eric García both struck the woodwork, highlighting Barcelona’s attacking threat but also their vulnerability at the back. Coach Hansi Flick acknowledged the issues while defending the team’s methods, insisting that a high defensive line remains integral to the club’s identity: "We want to play (how) our DNA is... we are Barca."
Yamal’s link-up with López produced the standout finish, as he cleverly flicked the ball past goalkeeper Nordin Jackers into the bottom corner. Jackers later denied another effort that seemed destined for the top corner, but Yamal’s influential performance drew praise from supporters and colleagues alike.
The closing moments were frenetic. Brugge believed they had snatched victory when Romeo Vermant tapped into an empty net, but VAR overturned the goal after ruling Vermant fouled goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny. Earlier in the game a potential penalty for Forbs was also overturned by VAR, removing another chance for the home side to regain the lead.
Frenkie de Jong reflected on the outcome, calling it a match Barcelona should have won: "It's a game I think we have to win, but we have to do things a lot better… if you let in three goals, it's difficult to win." Eric García added that Brugge "created a lot of danger" with limited work, underlining the urgent need to shore up the defence.
The draw keeps Barcelona competitive in the group but underscores persistent defensive concerns. With several key players sidelined through injury, Flick’s squad will need tactical tweaks and renewed resilience to sustain their Champions League campaign.
