Zohran Mamdani, New York City’s mayor-elect, has broken new ground as the city’s youngest leader and its first Muslim mayor. Beyond the milestone itself, his campaign was notable for a distinctive visual strategy that drew openly on Bollywood motifs as a way to bridge culture and politics.
The campaign’s creative choices reflected Mamdani’s family roots — he is the son of Indian filmmaker Mira Nair and scholar Mahmood Mamdani of Uganda. Designer Aneesh Bhoopathy said Mamdani supplied classic Bollywood posters as source material. That influence is visible in the campaign’s dramatic palette and type choices: deep royal blues, cranberry reds and marigold tones frame a bespoke serif treatment of the candidate’s name, evoking the look of vintage Hindi film posters.
The team deliberately translated cinematic storytelling into political outreach to connect with immigrant and working-class communities. Video spots repurposed memorable film moments — notably Amitabh Bachchan’s Deewar monologue — to articulate policy aims. In other clips, Mamdani adopted gestures and poses familiar from stars like Shah Rukh Khan, while references to films such as Om Shanti Om and Karz were used playfully to explain voting steps and campaign promises.
Bhoopathy said the campaign rejected typical political design conventions in favour of a bold, culturally rooted visual language. That approach helped Mamdani win broad support, carrying him past former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary and ultimately to the mayoralty.
Mamdani’s victory, and the visible role of Bollywood-inspired imagery in his messaging, illustrates the growing importance of cultural representation in American civic life. The campaign’s aesthetics not only energized specific communities but also signalled a fresh direction for how political stories are told in diverse cities.
