Canadians Seek Alternatives to U.S. Travel in 2026

Canadians Seek Alternatives to U.S. Travel in 2026

Post by : Meena Ariff

Canadians are reevaluating their travel choices, with the allure of the United States as a destination dwindling for 2026. A recent survey indicates that approximately two-thirds of those planning trips next year are opting for locations beyond the U.S.

Findings from a November 2025 survey, involving over 1,000 participants, show that 62 percent of Canadians are less inclined to visit the United States compared to the previous year. Instead, a significant portion is reallocating their travel expenditures to destinations regarded as safer and more cost-effective.

Staying within Canada is the preferred choice for more than a third of respondents, while Europe follows closely behind, along with Mexico and Asia, indicating a rising interest in culturally rich and long-distance travel.

Age appears to significantly influence travel preferences. Older Canadians exhibit more reluctance towards U.S. visits, whereas younger individuals show some willingness, albeit still with caution. Concerns such as political tensions, border delays, safety issues, and unfavorable currency rates are the primary factors leading to avoidance of trips to the U.S.

Booking trends already reflect this shift, as Canadian travel to the U.S. has notably decreased in 2025, while reservations for Europe, the Caribbean, South America, and Asia have been stable or on the rise. Experts suggest this indicates a shift in consumer confidence rather than a decline in overall travel interest.

Canadians are continuing to favor enriching and value-centric travel experiences, signaling a transformation in the global travel landscape for 2026, with the U.S. no longer occupying a central role.
