The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has publicly aligned itself with UEFA and CONCACAF in opposing FIFA’s proposal to sell a stake in the commercial rights of the FIFA World Cup to private investors. While expressing strong concerns over the plan, the AFC stopped short of supporting any potential boycott of FIFA competitions. In an official statement released on Friday, the AFC said it stands in solidarity with the two regional confederations and voiced serious reservations about the proposed creation of FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), a commercial subsidiary reportedly valued at US$20 billion. The new entity would oversee the commercial operations of the FIFA World Cup and other FIFA tournaments.
The AFC warned that the debate has reached a troubling stage, noting that public discussions about a possible FIFA World Cup boycott reflect the seriousness of the dispute. According to the confederation, football should never have reached a point where such discussions become necessary, emphasizing that the future of the global game depends on unity and cooperation among all football stakeholders.
A day earlier, AFC President Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al-Khalifa described the manner in which the proposal was introduced as "totally unacceptable" in a letter sent to AFC member associations. The confederation stated that the proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) does not currently have the broad consensus required for such a significant structural change. It stressed that the FIFA World Cup remains the most prestigious tournament in world football and draws its strength from the participation of all six continental confederations and the world's leading national teams.
The AFC also criticized FIFA’s internal consultation and decision-making process, saying the controversy has highlighted weaknesses in governance that need urgent attention. Even after FIFA issued a statement on Friday saying every national football association should have the opportunity to review the proposal and contribute to shaping the organization's future, the AFC maintained that key concerns regarding governance, transparency, consultation, and institutional procedures remain unresolved.

The AFC urged FIFA to use the current controversy as an opportunity to introduce meaningful institutional reforms. The confederation emphasized that democratic governance is not defined solely by voting rights but also by transparent leadership, timely consultation, informed discussions, and genuine participation throughout the decision-making process. The organization said strengthening these principles is essential to maintaining trust among football stakeholders and protecting the integrity of the world's most prestigious football competitions.
