Algeria has officially lodged a complaint with FIFA following its 3-0 defeat against Argentina in the FIFA World Cup 2026. The complaint focuses on several refereeing decisions that Algerian officials believe influenced the outcome of the Group J encounter in Kansas City.
According to reports, Algeria submitted its concerns to FIFA’s refereeing commission and highlighted incidents involving Argentina captain Lionel Messi and midfielder Alexis Mac Allister. The North African nation has requested a review of the officiating during the match.
Messi Incident Sparks Debate
One of the main points raised by Algeria relates to a first-half incident involving Lionel Messi and Algeria captain Aissa Mandi. Algerian officials argue that Messi appeared to step on Mandi’s calf from behind during a challenge.
The incident quickly sparked debate among football fans and analysts, with many questioning whether the Argentine star should have received a red card. However, the referee allowed play to continue and no disciplinary action was taken.
Second Complaint Against Mac Allister
Algeria also pointed to another controversial moment involving Argentina midfielder Alexis Mac Allister. Officials claimed that Mac Allister made contact with Algerian player Ibrahim Maza using a raised elbow during the second half.
The challenge reportedly went unnoticed by the match officials, adding to Algeria’s frustration over the refereeing performance throughout the game.
Messi Leads Argentina To Victory
Despite the controversy, Argentina produced a dominant display against Algeria. Lionel Messi delivered one of the standout performances of the tournament by scoring all three goals in a convincing 3-0 victory.

The Argentine captain opened the scoring with a powerful strike before adding a second goal from close range. He completed his hat-trick in the 76th minute with a composed finish that secured all three points for the defending champions.
Historic Achievement For Messi
The hat-trick marked Messi’s first-ever FIFA World Cup hat-trick and added another milestone to his legendary career. The goals also saw him equal Germany’s Miroslav Klose as the joint-highest scorer in men's World Cup history with 16 goals.
The achievement came during Messi’s 200th appearance for Argentina and just days before his 39th birthday, making the performance even more memorable.
FIFA Yet To Respond
FIFA has not yet publicly commented on Algeria’s complaint. The governing body is expected to review the concerns submitted by the Algerian Football Federation before deciding whether any further action is necessary.
Argentina will now prepare for its next World Cup fixture against Austria, while Algeria will look to bounce back when it faces Jordan in its upcoming group-stage match.
