South Korean authorities have taken a major step in a high profile investigation as police seek to arrest Bang Si-Hyuk, the founder and chairman of HYBE, the agency behind global K pop group BTS. The case has drawn widespread attention due to its impact on the entertainment and financial sectors.
Officials in Seoul confirmed that the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency has requested prosecutors to obtain a court warrant for Bang’s arrest. The move comes as part of an expanding investigation into alleged investor fraud.
According to investigators, Bang is accused of misleading investors in 2019 by stating that HYBE had no plans to go public. This reportedly led investors to sell their shares to a private equity fund under false assumptions. Shortly after, the company proceeded with its initial public offering, raising concerns about transparency and fairness.
Authorities suspect that Bang may have received significant financial benefits from the deal. Reports indicate that he could have gained around 200 billion won, equivalent to more than 100 million dollars, through an agreement tied to post IPO stock sales.
Bang’s legal team has responded by stating that he has fully cooperated with the investigation over a long period. They expressed regret over the arrest request and emphasized their commitment to participating in all legal proceedings to clarify their position.
The investigation has also resulted in travel restrictions, with Bang reportedly barred from leaving the country since August. This reflects the seriousness of the allegations and the ongoing nature of the case.
The situation has raised broader questions about corporate governance and investor protection within the rapidly growing K pop industry. HYBE, which has played a central role in the global success of BTS, now faces increased scrutiny from regulators and the public.
As the legal process moves forward, the outcome of the case could have significant implications for the entertainment business landscape in South Korea and beyond.
