The finances of the Trinamool Congress have come under investigation after West Bengal Police sought detailed banking records linked to three party accounts. The development comes at a time when the ruling party is facing internal political tensions and questions over its leadership structure.
Police Seek Five Years of Records
Investigators have requested transaction statements covering the last five years from a Kolkata-based bank. Officials are also seeking details regarding the opening of the accounts, including documentation submitted, account holders' information, and the sources of funds deposited into the accounts.
Complaint Triggers Investigation
The probe reportedly began after a complaint was filed at the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station by a Trinamool Congress MLA from South 24 Parganas. According to reports, the legislator is believed to be associated with a faction linked to rebel leader Ritabrata Banerjee.
Allegations of Suspicious Transactions
Police sources indicate that the investigation is focused on allegations involving suspicious financial transactions and claims that so-called "cut money" may have been deposited into the party accounts. Authorities are examining financial records to determine the origin and movement of funds.

Accounts Frozen During Inquiry
Following the registration of the complaint, authorities reportedly directed the bank to freeze all transactions linked to the three accounts. Sources suggest that the accounts together contain approximately ₹440 crore, making the investigation financially significant.
High Court Petition Filed
The freezing of the accounts has now reached the legal arena. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed before the Calcutta High Court challenging the decision to freeze the accounts. The court has allowed the petition to be filed, although a hearing date has not yet been announced.
Internal Party Questions Emerge
Adding another layer to the controversy, former Trinamool minister Aroop Biswas had reportedly written to the bank earlier requesting that transactions in the accounts be suspended. While Biswas identified himself as the party treasurer in the letter, party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh later stated that he no longer holds that position. The investigation and legal proceedings are expected to draw significant political attention in the coming days.
