Narendra Modi on Tuesday welcomed the decision of the new BJP government in West Bengal to implement the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme in the state. The Prime Minister said the “double-engine government” model would help ensure smooth and effective delivery of important welfare schemes launched by the Central government.
The announcement came after West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari confirmed that the state would begin implementing the Centre’s flagship healthcare programme. Under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, eligible families receive annual health insurance coverage of up to ₹5 lakh for medical treatment and hospitalization. The scheme is considered one of the world’s largest public healthcare insurance programmes.
Prime Minister Modi said the decision would greatly benefit poor and middle-class families across the state by reducing the financial burden of expensive medical treatment. He also stated that cooperation between the state and the Centre would improve healthcare delivery and ensure that welfare benefits reach people without delays. The Prime Minister emphasized that healthcare access remains a major priority for the government.
Ayushman Bharat was launched by the Central government to provide affordable healthcare support to economically weaker sections of society. The programme covers treatment expenses at both government and empanelled private hospitals across India. Millions of families in different states have already benefited from the scheme through cashless treatment facilities for major illnesses and surgeries.
The implementation of the scheme in West Bengal marks an important political and administrative development because the state had earlier not fully adopted the programme under previous governments. The move is expected to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and expand access to quality medical services for residents in both urban and rural regions of the state.
Political observers believe the decision may also carry political significance as the BJP government in the state seeks to align more closely with Central welfare initiatives. Supporters of the move say it will improve healthcare security for citizens, while critics may continue to debate implementation methods and coordination between state and central authorities.
Healthcare experts say large-scale public insurance schemes like Ayushman Bharat play an important role in reducing out-of-pocket medical expenses for low-income families. As the scheme expands further across states, authorities are expected to focus on hospital infrastructure, digital health systems, beneficiary awareness and faster claim processing to improve overall healthcare access in India.
