As summer intensifies across Bengaluru, the prices of essential seasonal items have witnessed a sharp rise, putting pressure on household budgets. From lemons and coconut water to traditional earthen pots, demand-driven inflation is becoming evident across local markets.
One of the most notable price hikes has been seen in lemons, a staple during the summer season. Traders report that lemon prices, which were around ₹80 per kilogram in January, have now surged to ₹150–₹180 per kilogram. With temperatures expected to rise further in the coming weeks, market experts anticipate prices could climb even higher, possibly reaching ₹220–₹250 per kilogram during peak summer.
The surge in prices is largely attributed to increased demand as people look for natural cooling solutions and hydration options. Lemon-based drinks, fresh juices, and traditional beverages see a spike in consumption during hot weather, driving up demand significantly. At the same time, supply constraints in certain regions have also contributed to the upward price trend.
Other summer essentials such as coconut water and earthen pots have also become more expensive. Earthen pots, widely used for naturally cooling drinking water, are seeing higher demand as consumers shift toward traditional and eco-friendly alternatives. Vendors across city markets report increased sales, but also note rising procurement and transportation costs.
Market vendors say that seasonal factors play a crucial role in determining prices, especially for perishable goods. With rising temperatures, storage and transportation become more challenging, further affecting supply chains. This combination of high demand and logistical constraints continues to push prices upward.
Consumers, meanwhile, are adjusting their buying patterns in response to the price surge. Many are opting for smaller quantities or exploring alternative products, while others continue to purchase essentials despite higher costs due to necessity during the summer months.
Traders believe that the current trend is likely to continue until the peak summer season stabilizes. Until then, Bengaluru residents may have to brace for higher expenses on everyday seasonal items, reflecting the broader impact of weather-driven demand on urban markets.
