A 34-year-old man has been sentenced to 11 months in prison after attempting to rob a woman in the parking area of Columbia Asia Hospital Bukit Jalil. The incident, which took place in broad daylight, triggered concern over public safety in parking areas around busy medical facilities in Kuala Lumpur.
According to police, the attempted robbery happened around 11:30am on May 18 when the suspect allegedly approached a 26-year-old woman while she was inside her vehicle in the hospital parking lot. Authorities said the man aggressively opened the victim’s car door and attempted to snatch her mobile phone before trying to escape with her handbag.
A struggle reportedly broke out between the victim and the suspect as the woman resisted the attack and screamed for help. Police said the suspect eventually fled the scene on a motorcycle after failing to steal any valuables. Officials confirmed that no material losses were reported during the incident.
Cheras police chief Mohd Rosdi Daud stated that investigators from the D9 Serious Crimes Investigation Division launched an operation shortly after the attempted robbery. The suspect was later arrested in the Brickfields area at around 5:36pm on the same day.
Further investigations revealed that the accused had an extensive criminal history with 11 previous criminal records. Authorities also seized several items believed to have been used during the crime, including a motorcycle, a helmet and a jacket linked to the suspect.
Police confirmed that the man was charged under Section 393 of the Penal Code for attempted robbery. After pleading guilty in court, he was sentenced to 11 months imprisonment. Officials described the swift arrest as a result of coordinated police efforts and public cooperation.
The case has once again highlighted concerns over personal safety in parking facilities, especially in crowded urban areas. Authorities are urging the public to remain alert, avoid isolated parking areas whenever possible and immediately report suspicious activity to law enforcement agencies.
Police officials also encouraged hospitals, shopping centres and commercial facilities to strengthen surveillance systems and security patrols in parking zones to help prevent similar crimes in the future.
