Cambodia’s Supreme Court on Friday upheld the incitement conviction of prominent opposition politician Rong Chhun, ending his legal appeal and imposing significant restrictions on his political future. While the court suspended the remainder of his prison sentence, the ruling effectively bars him from participating in politics for several years.
Supporters React With Anger
The decision triggered strong reactions from hundreds of supporters who gathered outside the Supreme Court in Phnom Penh. Many expressed disappointment and frustration, arguing that the verdict limits democratic participation and unfairly targets a leading opposition figure. The atmosphere outside the court remained tense as supporters voiced concerns over the future of political freedoms in the country.
Political Restrictions Imposed
Under the court's decision, Rong Chhun will be prohibited from engaging in political activities for five years. He will also lose his right to vote or contest elections during that period. In addition, he is barred from traveling abroad for the next three years, which represents the remaining portion of his original sentence.
Case Linked To Social Unrest Charges
Rong Chhun was convicted last year on charges of inciting social unrest after meeting communities affected by government development projects. Critics of the government have argued that the case is part of a broader pattern of legal actions aimed at silencing opposition voices and restricting political criticism.

Speaking to supporters after the ruling, Rong Chhun described the decision as unfair and accused the judiciary of acting under political influence. He maintained that he had committed no wrongdoing and insisted that the case was politically motivated. Human rights groups also questioned the independence of Cambodia’s judicial system following the verdict.
Government Rejects Criticism
Cambodian government officials rejected allegations of political interference and defended the court's decision. Authorities stated that the judicial process was conducted according to the law and emphasized that the government respects the independence of the courts and the country's legal framework.
Questions Over Political Freedom Remain
The ruling has renewed international attention on Cambodia’s political climate ahead of future elections. Analysts say the case raises broader concerns about political competition, civil liberties and opposition participation in the country. Although the Supreme Court's decision is final, Rong Chhun indicated that he may seek a royal pardon after reviewing the full judgment with his legal team.
