Cambodia Starts UN Maritime Dispute Process

Cambodia Starts UN Maritime Dispute Process

Post by : Shakul

Cambodia has formally initiated a United Nations-backed dispute resolution process against Thailand over overlapping maritime claims in the Gulf of Thailand, marking a significant development in a long-standing territorial disagreement between the two neighboring countries. The move reflects Phnom Penh’s determination to seek an international legal solution to issues that have remained unresolved for decades.

The dispute centers on maritime areas believed to contain substantial offshore oil and natural gas reserves. Estimates suggest that the energy resources beneath the Gulf of Thailand could be worth nearly $300 billion, making the region strategically and economically important for both countries. Control over these waters could have major implications for future energy development and national revenue.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet stated that the government had taken the step to safeguard Cambodia’s sovereignty and maritime rights under international law. According to Cambodian officials, the decision demonstrates the country's commitment to resolving disputes through established legal mechanisms rather than escalating tensions in the region.

The latest development follows Thailand’s decision last month to cancel a bilateral agreement signed in 2001 concerning overlapping maritime claims and joint energy exploration. That agreement had served as a framework for discussions and potential cooperation between the two countries, but its cancellation raised concerns about the future of negotiations.

The maritime disagreement is closely linked to broader border issues that have existed between Cambodia and Thailand for generations. Both nations share an approximately 800-kilometer land border, and several sections remain disputed due to historical boundary arrangements dating back to the French colonial period in Southeast Asia.

By initiating proceedings under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), Cambodia is seeking a rules-based approach to address competing claims. International legal experts note that such mechanisms provide countries with structured avenues to resolve maritime disputes peacefully while respecting international law and established legal standards.

Regional observers are closely monitoring the situation as both countries remain important members of the Southeast Asian community. While diplomatic engagement is expected to continue, the UN-backed process could play a significant role in shaping the future of maritime boundaries, energy cooperation, and bilateral relations between Cambodia and Thailand in the years ahead.
