China's efforts to increase the use of renewable energy in its rapidly growing artificial intelligence industry are facing significant challenges. Experts say that managing electricity demand from AI data centres remains difficult, creating concerns for power suppliers and grid operators.
The Chinese government has made the integration of computing infrastructure and clean energy a strategic priority as the country continues expanding its AI capabilities. Authorities want renewable energy to provide a much larger share of electricity used by data centres over the coming years.
Ambitious Green Energy Targets
China aims to have renewable sources supply nearly 80 percent of electricity consumed by data centres by 2030. This would mark a major increase from the 11 percent share recorded in 2023.
Officials believe the transition will help reduce carbon emissions while supporting the country's long-term environmental goals. However, industry experts caution that achieving these targets may prove difficult.
AI Growth Driving Massive Power Demand
The expansion of AI technologies is expected to dramatically increase electricity consumption across China. Estimates suggest that data centre power demand could rise by between 300 billion and 500 billion kilowatt-hours between 2026 and 2030.
This increase would account for a significant portion of China's overall electricity demand growth during the period, placing additional pressure on energy infrastructure.
Unpredictable Demand Creates Problems
One of the biggest challenges involves forecasting peak electricity demand from AI facilities. Unlike traditional industries, AI data centres often experience fluctuating workloads that are difficult to predict accurately.

Industry specialists note that operators typically run expensive graphics processing units at maximum capacity, limiting their ability to reduce power usage during peak demand periods.
Grid Operators Remain Concerned
Experts say utility companies and grid operators are cautious about expanding direct renewable energy connections to AI facilities. Such arrangements could reduce electricity sales through traditional networks and complicate long-term infrastructure planning.
There are also concerns that sudden changes in demand could create operational risks and affect the stability of regional power systems.
Data Centres Add Pressure On Infrastructure
China's rapid construction of data centres has already started increasing electricity loads in several regions. The growing number of AI facilities is forcing grid operators to balance rising demand while maintaining reliable power supplies.
Industry analysts believe more flexible power management systems will be needed to support future growth without placing excessive strain on the electricity network.
Balancing AI Expansion And Sustainability
While renewable energy remains central to China's environmental strategy, experts believe further technological improvements and policy adjustments will be required to meet ambitious targets.
The challenge now is ensuring that the country's AI industry continues expanding while maintaining energy security, reducing emissions and protecting grid stability.
