The government of Mongolia is considering a new law that would restrict children under the age of 16 from registering on certain social media platforms, as authorities aim to strengthen online safety and protect minors from digital risks.
According to officials, the proposal was presented by P. Naranbayar during a Cabinet meeting on March 11 in Ulaanbaatar. The draft legislation seeks to regulate how children participate in social networks and prevent those under 16 from creating accounts on age-restricted platforms.
Government representatives said the primary objective of the proposed law is to safeguard minors’ personal data and ensure their healthy physical and psychological development. Authorities also want to reduce exposure to cyberbullying, online harassment, harmful content, and potential criminal activities on digital platforms.
The draft law also aims to strengthen parental guidance and ensure that social media companies enforce stricter age-verification measures. Ministers have asked the Education Ministry to incorporate feedback from Cabinet members before submitting a revised version of the bill to Parliament for formal debate and approval.
The initiative comes as governments worldwide are increasingly concerned about the effects of excessive social media use among children. Policymakers in Mongolia say regulating early access to social networks will help protect young users from online attacks, misinformation, and digital addiction.
If approved by Parliament, the law would become one of the region’s stronger regulatory measures aimed at protecting children in the digital environment.
