A powerful 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region early Monday morning, causing panic among residents and forcing thousands of people to evacuate from affected areas.
According to Chinese state media, the earthquake hit near the city of Liuzhou and resulted in the collapse of at least 13 buildings. Rescue teams were immediately deployed to search damaged areas and assist trapped residents.
Authorities confirmed that two people lost their lives in the disaster, while one person remains missing. Four others were injured and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Officials stated that none of the injured are currently in life-threatening condition.
The strong tremors damaged homes, roads, and public infrastructure across several villages near the epicenter. Emergency workers continued rescue and recovery operations throughout the day as aftershocks remained a concern.
More than 7,000 residents were evacuated from vulnerable areas to temporary shelters set up by local authorities. Officials also warned of possible transportation disruptions due to damaged roads and unstable structures.
Videos and images shared by Chinese media showed cracked buildings, debris-covered streets, and rescue workers inspecting damaged properties in Liuzhou and surrounding communities.
The Chinese government has instructed emergency response teams to speed up relief operations and provide immediate support to affected families. Authorities are also assessing the full extent of the damage caused by the earthquake.
China frequently experiences earthquakes because several major tectonic plates meet near the country’s western and southwestern regions. Emergency services remain on high alert as rescue efforts continue in Guangxi.
