The Shangri-La Dialogue, Asia’s premier defense and security forum, opened in Singapore with one notable absence as China once again chose not to send its defense minister to the high-profile gathering. The move has attracted international attention amid growing geopolitical tensions across the Indo-Pacific region and ongoing concerns surrounding Taiwan and regional security.
The three-day summit brings together senior military officials, defense ministers, diplomats, and security experts from nearly 45 countries. This year's event is being closely watched as global powers navigate a complex international environment marked by strategic competition, regional disputes, and ongoing conflicts in different parts of the world.
United States Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth emerged as one of the key figures at the summit. His participation comes shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit to China, where both nations discussed trade and broader strategic relations. Analysts believe Hegseth’s address is expected to reaffirm Washington’s commitment to maintaining stability and balance in the Indo-Pacific region.
China’s decision not to send Defense Minister Dong Jun for a second consecutive year has fueled speculation among observers. Some experts view the absence as a reflection of Beijing’s growing confidence on the global stage, while others see it as a missed opportunity for direct military-to-military engagement between China and the United States during a period of heightened regional uncertainty.
Vietnamese President To Lam also delivered a significant keynote address during the forum. He emphasized the importance of meaningful dialogue, transparency, and responsible international cooperation. Without directly naming any country, he urged major powers to ensure that strategic competition remains guided by international law and mutual restraint.
To Lam further highlighted the need for regional mechanisms to reduce risks and prevent conflicts from escalating. He reiterated Vietnam’s consistent position on the South China Sea, stressing the importance of peaceful dispute resolution and adherence to international legal frameworks in maintaining long-term regional stability.
The absence of senior Chinese defense leadership has become one of the defining stories of this year's Shangri-La Dialogue. As security challenges continue to evolve across Asia, many participants believe that sustained communication among major powers remains essential for avoiding misunderstandings and preserving peace in one of the world's most strategically important regions.
