Singapore authorities are set to charge a Chinese national after he was allegedly involved in the theft of bank cards from a fellow passenger during a flight arriving from South Korea. The incident has drawn attention to increasing concerns about theft cases onboard international flights.
According to police reports, the 59-year-old suspect was arrested at Changi Airport Terminal 1 on May 18 during a targeted operation conducted by officers from the Airport Police Division. Authorities said the operation focused on preventing and investigating thefts committed during air travel.
Investigators stated that officers discovered two bank cards in the man’s possession that allegedly belonged to another passenger onboard the same flight. Police believe the suspect secretly accessed the victim’s belongings while the passenger remained unaware of the incident.
Initial investigations revealed that the accused allegedly removed a passenger’s bag from the overhead compartment before shifting to another seat several rows away. He reportedly opened the bag, removed the victim’s wallet, took two bank cards, and later placed the bag back in its original position.
Police added that the suspect then exited the aircraft normally while the victim had no immediate knowledge that the cards had been taken. The alleged theft was discovered only later, leading to a rapid investigation by airport authorities.
Singapore police emphasized that theft onboard aircraft is treated as a serious offence due to passenger safety and aviation security concerns. Authorities also reminded travelers to keep valuables secured and remain alert during flights, especially when storing bags in overhead compartments.
The accused is expected to face charges related to theft onboard an aircraft, an offence that may carry a prison sentence of up to three years, a financial penalty, or both under Singapore law. Further investigations into the case are currently ongoing.
