Renowned British zoologist, author, and artist Desmond Morris has passed away at the age of 98, according to reports citing his family. He was widely known for his groundbreaking work that explored human behaviour through the lens of animal biology.
Morris gained global recognition with his 1967 bestseller The Naked Ape, which examined humans as part of the animal kingdom. The book challenged conventional thinking by suggesting that human actions, emotions, and social patterns are deeply rooted in evolutionary instincts.
The publication sparked widespread debate at the time due to its bold and direct approach to topics such as human sexuality and behaviour. While some critics opposed its ideas, the controversy helped boost its popularity, making it one of the most talked-about scientific works of its era.
Throughout his career, Morris balanced his interests in both science and art. He described himself as having two identities — a rational scientist and a surrealist artist — and gained recognition in both fields. His work in British Surrealism further established his creative legacy.
Morris studied zoology at the University of Birmingham and later at Oxford, where he conducted research on animal behaviour. He went on to work at the London Zoo as a curator and became a well-known television presenter, bringing scientific ideas to a wider audience.
In addition to The Naked Ape, he authored several influential books, including The Human Zoo and Peoplewatching, which continued his exploration of human behaviour in modern society. His contributions helped popularise scientific thinking among the general public.
Even in his later years, Morris remained active, publishing new work and participating in art exhibitions. His death marks the end of a remarkable career that bridged science, literature, and art, leaving a lasting impact on how humans understand themselves.
